Armstrong helped pioneer “green” practices from as early as 1860. Our commitment to environmentally-preferable products and programmes began more than a hundred years ago when the company
developed a process to recycle cork scrap. The end result was a product which was introduced then and is known today, as linoleum. Armstrong Ceilings contain up to 70% recycled content; We have the broadest portfolio of ceilings with high recycled content. Armstrong suspension systems contain 30% recycled content – the highest percentage of post consumer content in the industry.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT |
| Since 1998, Armstrong has been engaged in efforts such as our 'gas reduction project' to focus on the control of energy use
during product manufacture. These programmes have, and continue to, achieve significant reductions in energy use. More... |
| |
WATER MANAGEMENT |
| Process water is continuously recycled within the manufacturing process, and is treated on site. As a result only minimal
discharges are made and only after proper and effective treatment.

CHINA CLAY |
Our Team Valley ceiling plant uses over 4,000 tonnes of china clay per annum as one of the main ingredients in its paint manufacturing
process. We have now identified how • to use less energy in producing the raw material, • to eliminate paper bags, pallets and disposal, • to reduce road traffic mileage in Cornwall.
|
|
|
PACKAGE OPTIMISATION |
| Over the many years that Armstrong has led the industry, we have developed, in conjunction with our customers, packaging that
utilises minimum material, but ensures durability of the product during transport and installation.
|
| During 2008 we assessed our overall packaging specifications and decided that an online labelling machine provided a number
of advantages – particularly with regard to reducing unnecessary raw materials. Historically, we have used stick-on labels
to identify products manufactured in our Team Valley manufacturing facility in the UK.
|
|
|
The new ‘on-line’ printing method gives us a number of waste saving and business advantages: • Removal of ‘millions’ of the old labels means less packaging, saving nearly 7 tonnes of paper annually = less waste. • Removal and saving of nearly 3 tonnes of glue which was used to apply the labels. • We also eliminate waste through obsolescence of old labels as products are updated.
|
We also gained additional advantages: • Quicker turn around from item to item saves time and cost in the plant • Provides greater flexibility for label changes and additional printed information for the future.
|
| This is just one small example of how investigating savings based around reducing our impact on the Environment can yield
additional and immediate business benefits.

V.O.C EMISSION MANAGEMENT |
| Armstrong is continually engaged in research and development efforts to minimise the impact on air quality of our products.
In accordance with EN 13964:2004, as part of the process for achieving the CE mark, all Armstrong ceiling products attained
the classification E1 for formaldehyde emissions, which is the best (i.e. lowest emissions) class.

| |
SAFETY PROGRAMMES |
| For Armstrong, safety is an ongoing key priority for our businesses, and as a result, we have made several step changes in
our processes, procedures and measures to attain a world class safety performance.
